I read this book over the Thanksgiving holiday. While I did enjoy it, the plot was very complicated. Is that a good thing? I’m not sure. However, the characters were strong, and I couldn’t wait to see how it played out. Louise Penny remains one of the top mystery authors of our day, and I cannot wait to see what she comes out with next. Also, her book covers are extraordinary. The sense of danger in this book is palpable, which I loved. I enjoyed the way the characters interacted. Gamache is forgiving, but at what cost? He has been through so much lately, and is Reine the perfect wife? It seems so. After finishing the book, I miss these characters. I can hardly wait for the next one. The subject matter was weighty, but it did work. Penny is gaining popularity with each book, and now it’s a series? Wow. This one begs to be talked about, for sure. Let the conversations begin!
